There are two ways of supporting kidney disease: dialysis (haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis) and kidney transplantation. They complement each other and may be carried out one after the other. In most cases, dialysis treatment will be proposed. In France, haemodialysis is the technique most frequently used.
Two ministerial circulars published in the Journal Officiel in September 2002 and applicable in 2005 provide for five types of dialysis facility.
